Why Did FSSAI Take Action Against Old Monk Products?
FSSAI has taken action against some companies that make alcoholic drinks, including a few Old Monk rum products. As per The Economic Times report, these companies may have broken food safety rules by adding certain flavouring ingredients that were not allowed. The regulator also found that some product labels gave misleading information, including claims about how old the drink was.
According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, laboratory tests found that rum and whisky samples from different manufacturers contained artificial or nature-identical flavours. FSSAI said adding these flavours hides the product’s real taste, which goes against the rules. It also found that the product labels did not mention that they were “flavoured” or “premix” variants. According to the regulator, this could mislead buyers.

Misleading Age Claims On Bottle
Moreover, FSSAI also highlighted the “7 years old blended” claim on one Old Monk XXX Rum product. The regulator said the drink was mostly made using unaged neutral spirit, while less than 5% of the product contained actual aged rum. According to FSSAI, this meant the product should not have carried the “7 years old blended” claim.
As per India Today, apart from Old Monk, FSSAI has stopped the sale of certain variants of Antiquity Blue Whisky, Royal Challenge Whisky and Bagpiper Deluxe Whisky. The move has raised concerns over the quality and manufacturing practices of these alcoholic beverages.
