Telangana was officially declared a state in 2014. It was expected that the state would soon bloom into a must-visit destination due to its natural landscapes, vibrant craft traditions and rich heritage. But even after so many years, this plan has not worked. The state has failed to make its mark as a key tourism spot. Now, as per a report by The New Indian Express, this might soon change.

An official told TNIE that tourism in Telangana never took off for many reasons. Tourism officers were frequently changed, and each brought in their own vision. A long-term plan never came into place. Along with that, the absence of a formal tourism policy for nearly 11 years clearly affected tourism in the state. Now the government is planning major changes.

As per the same report, a complete reset is planned and will be aligned with World Tourism Day on September 27. The state will formally unveil Tourism 2.0 with new policies. Authorities are identifying 27 special tourism areas across the state. They are planning unique experiences that will attract not only tourists but also students, professionals, history buffs and adventure seekers. The aim is to make Telangana more than just a quick stopover. It wants to become a place where visitors spend more time and immerse themselves in the state’s culture.

For instance, Pochampally, a town just outside Hyderabad, is known for its Ikat sarees. But now, instead of only buying sarees, tourists may soon be able to walk with a local guide and enter homes where weaving takes place. They will see pit looms and modern ‘Asu looms’ in use. Instead of just taking a saree home, these plans will let visitors experience the centuries of textile evolution of the state.

A new museum is also being developed to showcase Telangana’s weaving clusters. It will feature styles, techniques, histories and culture in an engaging format. There will be an interactive weaving room where tourists can try their hand at weaving. Modern technologies will also be used so that complex designs can be recreated.

Bhongir Fort And Kolanupaka Temple

The new plan for World Tourism Day also includes Bhongir in Telangana. The town is famous for its impressive Bhongir Fort, built on a massive monolithic rock. Adventure seekers can try rock climbing here, explore the fort’s history and visit a new museum that will display old photographs, weapons and stories of the fort.

The Jain temple at Kolanupaka will also be promoted as a spiritual destination. Along with these, eight other locations will be part of the first phase: Hyderabad, Yadagirigutta, Tribal Cluster, Bhadrachalam, Somasila, Warangal, Nagarjunasagar, Vikarabad and Nallamala circuit. The government is also planning to add healthcare and film tourism since Hyderabad is famous for its world-class hospitals and Ramoji Film City. In addition to that, resorts for destination weddings, wellness centres, adventure zones and eco-lodges are also being considered under this new strategy.
