The Mahim Fort is a historic fortress in Mumbai, nestled at the Mahim Creek. It is an important Grade-I heritage site recognised by UNESCO. Built in the 13th century, almost 800 years ago, the fort is now set to undergo major restoration and development work. Here’s everything you need to know.
Mahim Fort Set For Major Restoration
Originally built in the 13th century by King Bhimdev, Mahim Fort holds an important place in Indian history. The fortress was attacked by the Sultan of Gujarat in the 14th century and later rebuilt by the Portuguese in the 16th century. It was eventually acquired by the British, making it a fort that has witnessed a lifetime of history unfold within its walls.
As per a report by Mid-Day, Maharashtra is now set to involve the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to help the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) restore the fort to its former glory.
BMC and ASI will prepare a detailed plan of action for the fort’s comprehensive restoration and long-term maintenance. These plans will be made under the supervision of the Department of Cultural Affairs. The first joint meeting between the officials is expected to be held next week, after which the work might begin.

The Original Structure Will Remain Untouched
According to the same report, BMC first planned the restoration work nearly four years ago. However, the plan gained fresh momentum after 12 Maratha forts were awarded UNESCO World Heritage status in July this year.
The restoration work at Mahim Fort will be carried out carefully to ensure the original grandeur and structure remain intact. The authorities are planning to preserve the fort’s original design and components to maintain its authenticity and historical importance. Besides this, beautification and landscaping will also be done to honour the originality of the structure, which is why ASI is being roped in.
Civic official Ashish Shelar shared with Mid-Day that remains from King Bhimdev’s era and later Portuguese structures still exist within the fort. He further added that Mahim Fort spans one acre. The authorities are planning landscaping for an additional two acres of surrounding land.
From these updates, it is clear that the long-awaited restoration work of Mahim Fort will finally begin soon. It is definitely great news for history buffs!
