“Puja Me Swaad Badh Jata Hai,” Ankush Hazra On Kolkata Street Food During Durga Puja

This latest Tere Gully Mein episode was extra special. Ask us why? We got to meet Bengali superstar Ankush Hazra in Kolkata, and that too during Durga Puja; the time when the city is buzzing with lights, dhak beats, and mouth-watering street food. Durga Puja might be over, but the taste of those street snacks still lingers on our taste buds. And honestly, just like Ankush said, the food tastes even better during the Durga Puja celebrations.

Street Food Trail With Ankush Hazra

This Tere Gully Mein episode saw us pandal hopping in Kolkata with Ankush Hazra. And tell us, is there any better time to visit the city than during Durga Puja? We think not. The episode started with us watching the traditional Jhumur dance, an important part of Bengali Durga Pujo celebrations. Born and brought up in Bardhaman, a city in West Bengal, Ankush also shared childhood memories of pandal hopping and revealed how moving to Kolkata changed his life after becoming an actor.

We continued our street food trail through the bustling streets of Kolkata, enjoying Phuchka, Jhalmuri, Fish Fry (yes, Kolkatans do love their non-veg even during Durga Puja), and more. The episode, full of celebration and flavour, wouldn’t be complete without one iconic street snack: the Kathi Roll.

While relishing the chicken and egg kathi roll with Ankush Hazra, he said a line we couldn’t agree with more: “Aisa lagta hai puja mein swaad badh jata hai.” (The food tastes even better during Durga Puja.) He added that every time he eats kathi roll or any street food during Durga Puja, it just tastes better.

Kolkata’s Nightlife During Puja Is Pure Magic

When asked about his favourite kathi roll, Ankush answered without hesitation: egg and paneer. We are already planning to try the paneer version on our next Kolkata trip! What’s even more fascinating is that during Durga Puja, the city’s streets stay alive till late at night. Ankush said, “Jo maza hai woh raat me 8-9 baje ke baad hee aata hai.” (The real fun begins after 8-9 pm.)

He further shared with us that he stays out till 3 or 4 am, returns home around 6 in the morning, and does it all over again the next day. Our food adventure ended on a sweet note at KC Das, enjoying the iconic roshogulla, because no Kolkata trip is complete without that, right?
