On June 2, the Odisha triple train accident took place in Balasore district, claiming over 291 lives. A tender document issued by the railways details deep screening of all the types of main line track. These main line tracks on all the broad routes of the South Eastern Railway will be deep screened.

150 ballast cleaning machines (BCM) will be used to complete this deep screening exercise. These machines will help in improving track resilience and restoring drainage. In order to redistribute track ballast and restore the stability of the track, ballast regulating machines and dynamic track stabilisers will be used.

Activities like the refixing of joggled fish plates, the lubrication of fish-plated rail joints, and the opening of joggled fish plates will also take place.  (As per News18)

News18 informed that the Indian Railways is conducting this normal repair and safety exercise in order to make sure that the tracks are properly serviced and safe. Rail safety has come under scrutiny after the Odisha triple train accident took place. Hence, the timing of the tender on the South Eastern Railway is very significant.

The South Eastern Railway Zone includes West Bengal and Odisha. The triple train accident is under investigation and is being looked after by the CBI and the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS). The cause of the accident is speculated to be a signalling error.

The horrifying accident happened after the Coromandel Express crashed into a stationary goods train and got off the rails. Its coaches fell on the parallel track, resulting in the last coaches of the Yesvantpur Express being hit.
