Ask Indians some of their most loved desi vegetarian dishes and masala dosa, vada pav and dhokla would definitely be said. Interestingly, Pakistan’s Karachi is witnessing an Indian vegetarian food wave like no other. A shift from the ubiquitous meat-based dishes, residents of Karachi are increasingly craving Indian vegetarian street food. From small restaurants preparing masala dosa to food trucks serving vada pavs, here’s how these dishes have taken over the hearts of Pakistanis.

Indian Vegetarian Food Serenades Foodies In Karachi

As per a report by The Indian Express, foodies in Karachi in recent months have taken over a liking for “pure vegetarian Indian food”. This newly acquired taste for dishes like aloo tikkis, masala dosa, dhokla, vada pav and soybean aloo biryani is the latest food trend in the Sindh province. Maharaj Karamchand Vegetarian Foods Inn located in a historical compound on the buzzing MA Jinnah Road is often thronged by hordes.

The owner Mahesh Kumar stated to The Indian Express that their Soyabean Aloo Biryani, Paneer Karahi, Mixed Vegetables and Aloo Tikkis are favourites among patrons who dine at the restaurant for lunch and also opt for takeaways and deliveries. The homemade spices, fresh vegetables and vegetable oil used in the cooking attract carnivores to this restaurant which dates back to 64 years.

Street Stalls Selling Vada Pav & Masala Dosa Gain Popularity

Kavita who started her food stall in Cantt area, eight months ago told The Indian Express that she has developed a regular clientele who slock for her pure vegetarian dishes. Another stall run on the same lane by Mary Richards serves aam panna and dal samosas.

Two sisters Mahreen and Lubna learnt to make masala dosa, vegetarian rice and vada pav from their elders who migrated from India after the partition. Now, they run a stall in the Hussainabad area, popular for its traditional Pakistani meat dishes. Yet, the sisters welcome hordes of people eager to try their vegetarian dishes.

Apart from enjoying desi veg khaana at street food stalls, folks in Karachi also like to visit upscale places like Rajdhani Delight and Nawab Dynasty for their vegetarian Gujarati and Rajasthani food.
