18th August 2023, is a very special day as India’s first 3D-printed post office building in Bengaluru is now open. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw inaugurated this prestigious building situated in Bengaluru’s Cambridge Layout. Vaishnaw even took to X (formerly Twitter) to share a video showing its construction from scratch. Even PM Modi hailed this massive achievement for India on social media.
India’s First 3D Printed Post Office In Bengaluru Creates History
Cambridge Layout Post Office in Bengaluru’s Cambridge Layout is India’s first 3D-printed office building. Bathed in maroon, and white, this building with the pin code 560008 stands majestically. Spread across an area of 1,021 square feet it’s now functional and open to the public. Postal officials stated that Larsen & Toubro Limited constructed this first-of-its-kind building in India with guidance from IIT Madras.

Post its inauguration Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, stated to NDTV, that the spirit of developing our own technology and doing something considered impossible earlier is a defining feature. He further added that 3D-concrete printing technology was used to construct this new type of building.
He explains that this is actually a fully automated building construction technology. If you’ve always wondered how 3D printers work? Then, Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw elaborated on it. Here, a robotic printer automatically deposits concrete layer by layer according to an approved design. There’s also a special grade concrete involved which hardens quickly to make sure the layers have bonded to print the structure.

PM Modi Shares Pictures & Calls It Embodiment Of Self-Reliant India
If a conventional method was involved to construct the same post office in Bengaluru, it would have taken 6 to 8 months. However, using this 3D-printed technology, it took just 45 days. Now, that India’s first 3D-printed post office building is here it’s proof that this new technology can act as an alternative to conventional building practices. It saves time and cost when it comes to constructing a building.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to X (formerly Twitter) to hail this achievement. He called it a “testament to India’s progress and innovation”. Also, he stated that India’s first 3D-printed post office in Bengaluru embodies the spirit of the Aatmanirbhar (self-reliant) nation.
