Serving Dosa Without Sambar Is A Crime! Bihar Court Orders Restaurant To Pay ₹3500 Fine

Imagine you order a delicious plate of dosa from your favourite South Indian joint. You’re eagerly awaiting to enjoy the snack, only to find out that the restaurant didn’t serve sambar with it. Pretty much a Jag Soona Soona moment right? This happened to a man in Bihar and he took matters to the court and made sure the restaurant got involved in a legal soup. Here’s what happened next.

Bihar Court Orders Restaurant To Pay Fine For Serving Dosa Without Sambar

As per a report by India Today, on August 15, 2022, Lawyer Manish Gupta celebrated his birthday. So, he decided to order Masala Dosa from Namak restaurant in Bihar’s Buxar. He got a Special Masala Dosa costing ₹140 packed for himself. But later, when he opened the parcel, he was shocked to see that the sambar, an essential accompaniment to dosa, was missing.

So, the lawyer went to the restaurant and met the owner to enquire about the missing sambar. Reportedly, the owner rudely asked Manish Gupta if he wanted to buy the entire restaurant for ₹140. Angrily, the lawyer sent a legal notice to Namak restaurant. On receiving no response from the owner Manish Gupta filed a complaint with the District Consumer Commission.

Namak Restaurant Must Pay Interest If It Fails To Pay Fine On Time

Ved Prakash Singh, the chairman of the division bench of the Consumer Commission and Varun Kumar, a member found Namak restaurant guilty. And they imposed a fine of ₹3500 on the restaurant. Out of this amount, ₹2000 was the basic amount and ₹1500, was the litigation cost.

And if the restaurant fails to pay the fine on time, it needs to further pay 8 per cent interest on the fine amount. Nama restaurant has 45 days to pay the fine as per Bihar Court. The ₹3500 amount is charged on the basis of “mental, physical and economic” suffering caused to Manish Gupta for not getting served sambar with his dosa.
