IndiGo, India’s largest airline with a commanding 62 per cent share of the domestic market, is leading the way in workplace inclusivity by considering the introduction of the gender-neutral honorific ‘Mx’ for internal candidates. The airline’s focus on diversity is not new. The company has actively supported the LGBTQ+ community through various efforts. These efforts include launching employee referral programmes specifically designed to boost the recruitment of LGBTQ+ individuals. These programmes have strengthened candidate mobilisation through internal resources and created a more inclusive environment for LGBTQ+ employees.

IndiGo’s commitment to inclusivity is reflected in its employee benefits. The airline offers benefits such as gender reassignment surgery and includes live-in partners in its medical insurance plans. These measures have made IndiGo an attractive workplace for individuals from the LGBTQ+ community. The company’s inclusive benefits package is part of a broader strategy to create a supportive and welcoming environment for all employees.

In addition to its focus on LGBTQ+ inclusion, IndiGo is also dedicated to employing individuals with disabilities. Currently, the airline employs over 240 individuals with disabilities across more than 60 cities in various customer-facing roles. IndiGo carefully considers the placement of these employees by evaluating factors such as safety, accommodation needs, and skill mapping.

IndiGo prioritises merit-based hiring and has largely employed individuals with disabilities in customer service roles and cargo teams.  The airline plans to double the number of employees with disabilities in the coming financial year, further demonstrating its commitment to inclusivity.

The airline’s efforts extend beyond just hiring practices. IndiGo is steadily increasing its recruitment of LGBTQ+ individuals across various functions, including flying roles.  The airline aims to continue expanding its diverse workforce and enhancing its supportive policies. By the end of March 31, 2024, IndiGo had a total of 36,860 permanent employees, which includes 5,038 pilots and 9,363 cabin crew members.
