The airline announced its latest addition to the international network by launching direct flights to Jaffna. IndiGo will kickstart daily flights from Chennai to Jaffna from September 1. After Colombo, this beautiful city is the second destination in Sri Lanka included in the airline’s international routes. According to a report by The Times of India, the bookings for flight tickets on this journey began on August 1, 2024.

The airline released a statement on this grand announcement. It mentioned Jaffna being IndiGo’s 34th international destination. Considering the entire network including both domestic and overseas, this latest addition becomes the 122nd city. Vinay Malhotra, IndiGo’s Head of Global Sales, shared that the airline operates 30 flights in a week to take travellers from India to Colombo.

Once regular IndiGo flights start flying from Chennai to Jaffna, the trade ties, tourism, and air connectivity will grow between India and Sri Lanka. India is already the biggest market for overseas tourists visiting Sri Lanka. With the new route commenced by IndiGo, the connection and contribution to the market are likely to strengthen more.

Jaffna Is Becoming More Accessible

Flights from Chennai will take about an hour and 15 minutes to land in Jaffna. This short and quick journey will seamlessly link these two cities. Jaffna is already in demand as more and more people share interest in visiting here. In the past nine months, more than 21,000 passengers travelled between Chennai and Jaffna and the numbers are the biggest proof showing travellers’ eagerness to explore this Sri Lankan city.
