‘Palike Bazaar’ In Bengaluru Is South India’s First Underground AC Market

According to a report by Deccan Herald, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and MLA M Krishnappa inaugurated Palike Bazaar — South India’s first underground air-conditioned market— on August 25 in Vijayanagar, Bengaluru built on a budget of ₹13 crore. This market is nestled near Vijaynagar metro station and the bus stand. It’s inspired by Delhi’s popular Palika Bazaar, an underground market near Rajiv Chowk metro station that houses 380 shops selling clothes, gadgets and other products.

Bengaluru’s Palike Bazaar is named after the 16th-century Vijayanagar emperor Krishnadevaraya. Krishna Devaraya Palike Bazaar spans 1365 square metres and has a total of 79 shops since its opening. The central air-conditioning of the market apart from 31 shops’ separate air-conditioning lures shoppers for a convenient and comfortable shopping experience.

Krishnappa stated to Deccan Herald that earlier, many pedestrians of Vijayanagar complained about street vendors taking over roads. In his opinion, this underground market is designed to benefit everyone. Siddaramaiah credited M Krishnappa for paving the way for underground markets. He believes AC underground markets like Vijayanagar’s Krishna Devaraya Palike Bazaar will decongest road surfaces in the city.

He hints at building more such underground markets in the ‘Garden City’. Also, commuting to and from this market is a piece of cake for Bengalureans as it’s located next to the metro station and bus stand.
