The seaside town of Digha in West Bengal’s Purba Medinipur district is now home to the newly built Jagannath Temple. It is quickly becoming a key destination for both pilgrims and tourists. The temple designers modelled it closely after the iconic Jagannath Temple in Puri, Odisha. The authorities proposed the idea in 2018, began the construction in 2022, and officially opened the temple to the public on 30 April 2025.

Since the opening, devotees and travellers have continued to visit, eager to experience the temple’s spiritual atmosphere. Officials expect annual footfall to exceed two million, especially during major festivals and holidays. With the sea as its backdrop and devotion at its heart, the temple brings a calming, sacred presence to Digha’s coastline.

Lord Jagannath is worshipped along with his elder brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra at the temple. The name Jagannath means “Lord of the Universe,” and the followers regard him as a form of Lord Vishnu who embodies love and compassion. Balabhadra, often depicted with a mace, represents strength and righteousness. Subhadra, known for her wisdom and grace, plays an important role in temple rituals and holds a special place in the hearts of devotees.

These three deities hold great significance in the Vaishnava tradition, and the worship practices are inspired by those followed at the original Puri temple. During the famous Rath Yatra in Puri, millions gather every year for a grand chariot procession to honour the trio in a vibrant celebration. Now, Digha also plans to celebrate it on a similar scale.

Built in the traditional Kalingan style, the temple features a breathtaking blend of heritage and artistry. At 65 metres (213 feet) tall, the main tower or vimana, dominates the skyline. Artisans from various Indian states collaborated on its intricate carvings, showcasing motifs and spiritual symbols that reflect centuries of temple craftsmanship.

The flooring is crafted from fine marble imported from Vietnam, while sandstone from the famed Banshi Hills of Rajasthan forms the temple’s outer structure. With each chisel and design, the temple stands as a living homage to India’s architectural and spiritual legacy.
