Instead Of Dec 25, MTHL To Now Open In Jan 2024; Toll To Be Subsidised By 40-50%

It was recently announced that the Mumbai Trans Harbour Sea Link or the MTHL would open on December 25 as it coincided with the birth anniversary of Atal Bihari Vajpayee. However, owing to some works that are still pending, the opening of the sea link will now be postponed. As per reports, the MTHL will now open towards in end of January 2024. Here are all the important details that you would need to know about this new update regarding the MTHL.

MTHL Opening Delayed; To Now Open In January 2024

It was announced earlier that the MTHL would be inaugurated on December 25 in order to commemorate the birth anniversary of Atal Bihari Vajpayee. However, there is still some work pending on the bridge owing to which, the opening of the project will not be delayed. According to an article recently published by The Times Of India or the TOI, the MTHL will now open in late January of 2024.

The article stated that though the exact date of the inauguration is not yet known, it is hoped that it will be open for public use before January 20. As per a statement by Devendra Fadnavis, who is the deputy chief minister of Maharashtra, cited in the TOI article, the new deadline is January-end. This is because the December deadline seemed a bit hard to meet.

Tolls To Be Heavily Subsidised By The Government

Initially, the toll for the MTHL was prescribed to be ₹500. The calculation of the toll rate was based on a formula which was drafted by the National Highway Authority of India or the NHAI. A formula which was used to calculate and finalise the toll rate of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link or the BWSL was also utilised.

However, this toll rate for MTHL was deemed unrealistic by the chief minister’s office. Hence, the toll rate will now be heavily subsidised. The TOI article stated that the cabinet will propose a heavy subsidy and will try to reduce the toll by at least 40 to 50 per cent. As per a bureaucrat cited in the article, the toll is calculated based on a variety of factors such as total project cost, length as well as the intensity of vehicular traffic and other factors.

Since the project’s inception, the MTHL has been subject to quite a lot of delays. It is the longest sea bridge in the country and stretches across 23 kilometres. Once completed, it will connect Mumbai to Navi Mumbai.
