International Paragliding Championship Is Back At Himachal’s Bir With 186 Players From 33 Countries

This year, the Bir Billing region of the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh is hosting the Cross Country World Cup Paragliding International Championship. The championship kicked off on October 26 and was a joint effort between the Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (HPTDC) and the Billing Paragliding Association or the BPA. Here is everything that you need to know about this remarkable championship that is currently taking place at this breathtaking site!

The championship was flagged off in the presence of and by Kishori Lal, who is the Chief Parliamentary Secretary and the chairperson of HPDTC, who inaugurated the event virtually from Shimla. Prior to the inauguration, Kishori Lal also performed a yajna at the take-off site. This championship was a joint effort between the BPA and HPTDC and will continue until November 2.

Bir Billing is a hotbed for paragliding in India and hence, the location of the event couldn’t have been better. The Cross Country World Cup Paragliding International Championship is a pre-world cup event, according to an article recently published by The Times Of India or TOI. Around 186 players from more than 33 countries are going to take part in this event.

Participants are from countries like  Australia, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, China, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, South Africa, Sweden, The United Arab Emirates, etc. In addition to different countries, teams from the Indian Air Force, Army, and Navy have also participated in the event. If the participation is any indication, the joint venture is going to be quite a success.

Other Details About The Championship

This is not the first time this championship has happened here. In fact, it is the second time. The first championship took place in 2015. According to the TOI article, two dedicated teams from the Indian Air Force Adventure Wing as well as the Indian Army Adventure Wing will be deployed at the location to handle any emergency situation should it arise.

Paragliding is easily one of the most thrilling outdoor activities that you can do. It is on the bucket list of almost every traveller worth their salt. It requires a lot of practice, skill, and of course, courage. Not everyone has the guts to take to the skies from such great a height! Bir Billing is famous for paragliding.

The Chief Minister of the state, Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, wants Himachal to become a premier tourist destination and championships like these help elevate its status.
