The Indian government has curated an all-new Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) platform and launched it in September 2022. Bengaluru is the first city in India that got to utilise its facilities and the residents are using this platform since it came into action in September. After 7-8 months of its initiation, ONDC is finally gaining all the attention and people are very excited to use this platform to order food, groceries, cleaning essentials, and more.
Is ONDC The Biggest Competition Of Swiggy And Zomato?
Many users have started using the platform to place their orders and get their food items and products delivered to their doorstep. They have noticed a drastic difference in the total price of their orders on all the 3 platforms: ONDC, Swiggy, and Zomato. In comparison to the most used Swiggy and Zomato, the prices on ONDC are much lesser. Such significant margins are now the talk of the town.
Netizens took to social media platforms to discuss the new platform by the Indian government and whether it can enter the e-commerce industry exclusively and disrupt it. Twitter user Ravisutanjani @Ravisutanjani has shared a Twitter thread where he emphasised various criteria and aspects of all these platforms.

India is a Very Large Market with over 800 Million People having access to the Mobile Internet
We have an aspiration never ending Population, there’s still a big market for
• Payments
• E-Commerce
• Consumption
• Gig Economy
• Penetration of Financial Products— Ravisutanjani (@Ravisutanjani) May 7, 2023
Ravisutanjani believes that ONDC can turn out to be a major competition and a threat to companies such as Swiggy, Zomato, Uber, and more. This new platform won’t dismiss the existing prominent names in the industry completely.
I honestly believe that ONDC won’t kill platforms like Zomato, Swiggy, Ola, Uber, 1mg etc
But it’ll certainly Evolve as a Threat
Precisely what UPI did to Visa, Mastercard etc
FYI – UPI does More Volumes in a Month than Annual Credit Card Spends of Indians Combined https://t.co/vrYAyttqmF

India majorly have two types of Consumers
a) Who is Loyal to Better Products, Experiences, Customer Services & don’t mind paying Extra Premium
b) Who is Loyal to Cashback & Discount, Primarily Credit/Deal Seeker Audience, they can compromise a bit on Product/Experience

• Similarly, For Food Ordering Restaurants Pay Various Charges & Commission to Aggregators e.g. Swiggy & Zomato
• With ONDC, they can get Relief from High Commission. 2-4% Instead of 20-28%
• Can take control of Delivery with 3rd Parties e.g. Dunzo, Shadowfax, Rapido etc pic.twitter.com/EoUUF1NSIa

Here’s What Twitterati Has To Say!
A Twitter user Prodosh Mitter (@meanderings19) shares how he is a bit cautious about the quality control of the products. Though the pricing is impressive, he feels the quality can be an issue. Also, he pointed out a crucial question of the delivery process. In case, any problems are faced in the process, who will be involved to take care of that?
While pricing is surely attractive, a little skeptical about quality control. As the delivery is handled by third party, who would be held responsible if there’s an issue with the delivery? Zomato or Swiggy ensure quick and secure delivery to get more repeat business.

I saw a chai shop near my house listed. Cheap price and I know quality is decent. No delivery charges. Rs. 18 per cup. I know he won’t cheat. Indeed he delivers to shops in area. Chaayos charges me almost 150 per cup.

Bro, it’s a scam. My order delivery time it was showing 54 mins but still my order is not delivered and it’s more than 72 hours. There is no way to contact Paytm or the seller..! I think my money is gone @Paytm . I will suggest everyone not to get into this trap by paytm and not… https://t.co/QCH4ayaC1j

Who will be responsible for delivering the orders to the users? Will it be the delivery personnel from the platform where the user placed the order or the seller?

Coming days or Years.. We should see who owns and eventually who takes over ONDC..
This kind creating Monopoly towards a certain business houses, to take control of every business sector.
Is not good for a country, on the long run…
