Japan was hit by an earthquake on New Year’s Day and has been grappling with its impact. Scores of people have lost their lives and many more were injured. Rescue operations are underway but the situation seems dire. Here are all of the latest updates regarding the situation.

Japan Earthquake: Latest Updates From The Region

1. Death Toll Increases To 62

According to an article which was recently published by livemint, the death toll in Japan owing to the recent earthquake has increased to 62. Tens of thousands of homes have been destroyed and water, network and power services have been impacted.

2. More Than 300 Injured Due To Earthquake And Its Impact

In addition to 62 people dying, around 300 people have also been injured. Out of these 300, 20 are severe cases. Rescue operations are underway and officials are doing their best to restore people to safety.

3. Ishikawa Prefecture Is The Worst-Hit

Japanese Army personnel have been dispatched to Ishikawa Prefecture as it is the worst-hit out of all the prefectures in Japan affected by this earthquake. Ishikawa Prefecture is located in the Noto peninsula.

4. 140 Tremors Detected Since January 1, 2024

The first earthquake measuring 7.6 magnitudes on the Richter scale hit the country on the first day of the new year. Since then, the livemint article says that around 140 earthquakes have been detected.

5. Tsunami Warnings And Advisories Issued

The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a major tsunami warning on Monday. The tsunami was an after-effect of the earthquake. Low-level tsunami warnings were also issued for islands like Honshu and Hokkaido and the rest of the western coast of the region.
