John is one of the most loved actors in the Hindi film industry today. However, the long journey to reach where he is today took hard work, effort, dedication, and a few sacrifices too. The actor walked down memory lane and reminisced about his humble beginnings on a recent podcast— The Ranveer Show with Ranveer Allahbadia.
Before joining the Bollywood industry, John worked as a media planner. He completed his graduation from Jai Hind College and pursued an MBA too. After completing his studies, he joined a company as a media planner. He worked at an advertising agency earning ₹6,500. Later, the actor got promoted as well. His take-home salary was ₹11,500.

Recalling stories from a couple of decades back, Abraham talked about how he spent his monthly salary back in the day. He revealed that his lunch would cost him only ₹6.25 in 1999. He usually ate two chapatis and dal fry. The actor did not spend a lot on unnecessary things. Rather, he invested all his savings into equity-based mutual funds and also made a profit of ₹60,000 in just three years. “That was where my career began,” shared John.

In a conversation with Ranveer, John shared a special anecdote of participating in the Gladrags Manhunt Contest. This was years before he started pursuing acting as a full-time career. Shah Rukh Khan, Karan Johar, Gauri Khan, and Karan Kapoor were judges in the modelling competition. Interestingly, John won Gladrags and won a whopping prize money of about ₹40,000 to ₹50,000.
