Kamiya Jani recently took a peek into India’s aviation future at the Startup Mahakumbh in Delhi — and what she discovered was nothing short of revolutionary. Meet Sarla Aviation, the Bengaluru-based startup behind what’s being called India’s first flying taxi. Slated for launch by 2028, this innovation is all set to redefine the way urban India travels.

Unlike traditional aircraft, this flying taxi doesn’t need a runway. It lifts off vertically like a drone, cruises above traffic, and lands just as smoothly. Developed by Indian entrepreneurs and their German collaborator, the air taxi is entirely electric, which means zero fuel costs and a lower carbon footprint.

Designed to seat six passengers along with a pilot, it has been built with top safety standards and sleek interiors. And here’s the kicker — the founders claim it could eventually cost as little as your average auto rickshaw ride!

When Kamiya spoke with the founders, they shared that the initial price would be close to a premium cab fare. But the long-term vision is to make the flying taxi in India accessible to everyday commuters. Think of it as a way to teleport across the city — minus the traffic, honking, and stress.

The company is named Sarla Aviation, in honour of Sarla Thukral — India’s first female pilot. The co-founder, Rakesh, revealed that the name was also chosen to inspire his daughter and encourage future generations of girls to dream big and aim high.
