Kashmir: 10th-Century Shivling Found In Jhelum River; To Be Showcased At SPS Museum In Srinagar

A rare 10th-century Shivling was discovered near the Army camp at Khanpora, Baramulla, in Jammu and Kashmir. As per the authorities, the ancient Shivling is carved from stone and measures 137 cm in length and 160 cm in width.

In a rare find, an ancient Shivling was recovered from the Jhelum River near an Army camp in Jammu and Kashmir. The Jammu and Kashmir Department of Archives, Archaeology and Museums announced that the 10th-century Shivling was found during sand extraction by the local labourers. 10th-Century Shivling Unearthed In Jammu & Kashmir

According to Hindustan Times, a Shivling, dating back to approximately the 10th century AD, was discovered near the Army camp at Khanpora, Baramulla, in Jammu and Kashmir. The Department of Information and Public Relations confirmed this on Sunday, mentioning that the ancient idol was discovered by the local labourers.

According to the authorities, the ancient Shivling measures 137 cm in length and 160 cm in width. The discovery is seen as an important reflection of the region’s cultural and historical richness. As per reports, the Shivling discovered in Jammu and Kashmir has been carefully preserved. It will soon be showcased in a museum in Srinagar to appreciate its historical significance.

The ancient Shivling was in the custody of the Indian Army’s 22 Medium Regiment in Baramulla. They later handed it over to the Department of Archives, Archaeology & Museums. It will be transported and showcased at the SPS Museum in Srinagar soon.

Addressing the media, Kuldeep Krishan Sidha, Director of Archives, Archaeology and Museums, J&K, said, “The recovery of the Shivling is not only an important archaeological find but also a testament to our enduring cultural legacy. The Department is committed to the preservation and respectful showcasing of such artefacts for the educational and spiritual enrichment of the public.”
