Kolkata Metro: East-West Extension To Haldiram Picks Up Pace With ₹2,265 Cr Funding Request

The long-delayed East-West Metro extension to Haldiram may finally be on track as the Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation (KMRC) has approached the central government for full funding to the tune of ₹2,265 crore. This strategic 6.6-km stretch from Sector V to Haldiram is expected to transform connectivity across Kolkata’s eastern corridor.

As reported by the Millennium Post, KMRC seeks full central funding for the long-awaited metro corridor. The proposed extension is part of the larger East-West Metro corridor, which has already eased travel woes across several parts of the city. The new stretch will begin from Sector V and move via an elevated path along VIP Road. It will ultimately reach Haldiram, with four key stations planned en route. Notably, the Haldiram terminal will be built underground, offering smooth interchange options for future airport-bound commuters.

Once operational, this stretch will drastically cut travel time for office-goers and daily passengers, enhancing Kolkata’s public transport system while also easing road traffic congestion along one of the city’s busiest thoroughfares.

Previously, the project faced repeated delays due to funding disagreements between the state government and the railways. While the original cost-sharing was meant to be 70:30 (state to centre), it was later adjusted to a 50:50 ratio. However, with the state expressing its inability to bear the cost, KMRC has now urged the central government to shoulder the entire amount to ensure timely progress.

This move marks a proactive step towards reviving one of the city’s most essential metro extensions, signalling that momentum is finally building around the project.

Adding further value, the last 1.5 km stretch from Haldiram to the airport will also be underground, ensuring compliance with Airports Authority of India regulations. This would allow for a seamless link between the East-West Metro extension to Haldiram and the New Garia–Airport Metro line, making airport travel much more convenient.
