We come bearing good news for all you metro users in Kolkata! The Kolkata Metro authorities have decided to operate more trains on the Purple Line. Furthermore, they will also bring down the interval between two services from 50 minutes to 22 minutes. Scroll on to know more about this.

More Trains To Run On Kolkata Metro Purple Line

According to the Hindustan Times, the Kolkata Metro will operate 22 additional trains on the Joka-Majerhat section of the Purple Line daily from May 5. As per the announcement, the number of trains on this line will be increased from 18 to 40 from Monday.

The Purple Line, at present, is operational between Joka and Majerhat in the south-western part of Kolkata. Currently, construction work is on from Majerhat to Esplanade, where the line will then meet the Blue Line and Green Line, joining the rest of the metro network.

The addition of the metros will offer convenience to commuters as the interval between the two services will be significantly reduced. The waiting time between two services will go down from 50 minutes to 22 minutes. For now, the Purple Line of the Kolkata Metro will remain shut on Saturdays and Sundays.

The additional trains will operate in each direction. The first train will leave from Majerhat at 8.27 AM and from Joka at 8.30 AM. Furthermore, the last trains from Majerhat will depart at 3.28 PM and from Joka at 3.28 PM.

Extension to IIM Calcutta Approved

In another major development, Kolkata Metro’s Purple Line is set for expansion beyond Joka. The line will reach the IIM Calcutta campus and will be extended by 1.7 kilometres. Once completed, the Kolkata Metro Purple Line will stretch 18 km from IIM-Joka to Eden Gardens. The Esplanade Metro hub will serve as a vital interchange with both the North-South and East-West Metro corridors.
