Kolkata’s Park Street has been home to some of the city’s favourite eateries for decades. Among the many restaurants in the neighbourhood, three of them that has been around for over 60 years now, three of them received the prestigious heritage plaque by the Indian Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage. Mocambo, Kwality, and Trinca’s become the City of Joy’s first restaurants to receive heritage status.
The Menu Of These Iconic Restaurants Remained Unchanged For Years
However, these three winning Kolkata restaurants are each a glorious time machine in their own right. The menu of these iconic places has remained unchanged over the years with a few small additions. While Trincas introduced live musical performances Kwality offered a range of north Indian delicacies. Mocambo, has remained untouched both in terms of menu and its decor.
These Restaurants Are A Window To Explore Kolkata’s Jazz Scene
To explore Kolkata’s Jazz music scene, Trincas is a must-visit. It shares a close association with artists like Usha Uthup, Savages, Flintstones, Benny Rozario, Toto Wallang, Eve, Linda, and Flora. On Mocambo’s menu, you will find the word ‘H’ against dishes, such as Devilled Crab, Chicken Ala Kiev, and Chicken Tetrazzini. Here ‘H’ stands for ‘Heritage’ and signifies dishes that date back to 1956.
Kolkata’s Indian Coffee House And Paramount To Also Receive Heritage Status
While Intach awarded them the honour in December 2019, the plaque unveiling ceremony was postponed due to the ongoing pandemic. Now, as restaurants begin opening their doors, the awards are eventually being announced. Many other popular eateries in Kolkata are in the pipeline to receive heritage status and including the famous College Street sherbet outlet Paramount, and Indian Coffee House. Both these destinations continue to be a hot favourite between residents and tourists alike.
