Kolkata’s Vidyasagar Setu, Also Known As Second Hooghly Bridge To Be Closed On January 2 And 9

vidyasagar setu

The Hooghly River in West Bengal is crossed by the longest cable-stayed bridge in India, Vidyasagar Setu. Because it was the second bridge over this river, it is commonly referred to as the Second Hooghly Bridge. According to recent developments, early on January 2 and 9, all traffic on Kolkata’s Vidyasagar Setu will be prohibited. Here’s more about it, as well as traffic restrictions in the city for New Year’s Eve.

Kolkata’s Vidyasagar Setu To Be Closed In January

The hours of the closures for Kolkata’s Vidyasagar Bridge are 1:00 am to 3:00 am. This closure is required to allow the Hooghly River Bridge Commissioners’ (HRBC) engineers to replace the stay-and-hold-down cables and bearings.

This is the bridge’s second total closure in recent memory; the first occurred earlier this month, on December 20. Interestingly, this will be the first time that two working days will be dedicated to maintenance. After midnight, diversions will be in place, and the real closure will occur between one and three in the morning.

The road intersections leading to Maidan will be closed to vehicles from 4 pm on December 31 to 4:30 am on January 1 and from 4 pm. on the same day until midnight, according to traffic police advice from Kolkata.

Park Street, Shakespeare Sarani, Ho-Chi-Minh Sarani, Middleton Street, Little Russell Street, Russell Street, and Camac Street are among the streets that will be one-way at this time. There will be limited vehicular traffic from Royd Street/Free School Street towards Park Street.

Temperature Might Dip In January

Moreover, Kolkata recorded 13.7°C on December 17, the greatest minimum temperature for any December since 1999 and the lowest temperature of the month. The closest past December temperatures to this year’s record were 13.2°C in 2022 and 2006 and 13.1°C in 2013, which was still somewhat behind this year’s total.

In December, the lowest temperature typically reaches 11 or 12°C. December 1999 was the warmest month of the decade, with a minimum temperature of 14.3°C. Comparably, 13.5°C was the lowest recorded minimum temperature in December 1995.

The return of the northwest winds is predicted after January 5, which might result in a minimum temperature dip to 15°C or even lower during the first week of January. (As per Times Now)
