Mandu: A Heaven For Historical & Geographical Buffs!

The town of Mandu is located 100 km to the Southwest of Indore in Dhar district. It is home to a variety of artistic works that blend the rich cultural traditions of Turkey and Afghanistan. Each of its structures is a work of art, including the enormous Jami Masjid and Hoshang Shah’s Tomb. In fact, the latter is considered to have served as inspiration for the Taj Mahal’s master architects. It offers a wide variety of sights to explore, including forts, palaces, gateways, and temples. A stroll through the collection of magnificent landmarks in Mandu, a city studded with breathtaking architectural gems, may leave you spellbound.

Places to see in Mandu:

  • Roopmati’s Pavilion – It was originally built as an Army post but became the Queen’s retreat.
  • Jahaz Mahal – It is a palace built between artificial lakes —Munj Talao and Kapur Talao. It was an imaginative recreation of a royal pleasure craft.
  • Hindola Mahal – It is an audience hall built with beautiful and delicate sand work, moulded columns and an ornamental facade.
  • Baz Bahadur Palace – This palace features a spacious courtyard, high terraces and offers a breathtaking view.

The Dino Adventure & Fossil Park in Mandu is well-known for its preserved dinosaur bones and eggs that date back 100 million years, as well as its 65–70 million-year-old fossilised trees, 80 million–year–old sea creature fossils, and 30,000–year–old Stone Age artefacts. 

On the way from Mandu to Indore, there is a diversion that leads to Patalpani Waterfall. The waterfall is currently only a trickle, but from July to October it is at its highest water level. On the Choral River, a tributary of the Narmada, it boasts a 91-meter plunge, and the pit (kund) at its base is said to be as deep as patala, the underworld in Indian mythology.
