Magnitude 7.7 Earthquake Triggers Tsunami Warning In Pacific Ocean!

Along with the geographical wonders and flora and fauna, natural disasters are a part of life on Earth. They are dependent on the movement of the planet and one thing triggers another. Recently, Loyalty Island, a province of New Caledonia, suffered a massive earthquake. And this has triggered tsunami alerts in the Pacific Ocean.

On Friday, New Caledonia’s Loyalty Island experienced an earthquake of a magnitude of 7.7. This was followed by tsunami alerts in the Pacific Ocean. In fact, people were warned to avoid the coastal areas. According to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC), some coastal areas of Vanuatu will experience waves ranging from 0.3 metres to 1 metre above the tide level. Whereas 25 island groups like Tonga and Tuvalu will experience waves below that level.

As for New Caledonia, there is an alert for a 22-centimetre tsunami near it. The United States Geological Survey has issued an alert for the areas around New Caledonia, Vanuatu and Fiji.

There are additional significant aspects to take into account besides earthquake magnitude, which is one component that influences the creation of tsunamis. It must be a shallow maritime earthquake that moves the seafloor. Although modest tsunamis have occasionally been produced by major strike-slide earthquakes, thrust earthquakes (as opposed to strike-slip) are much more likely to produce them.

It is very unlikely that 6.5 magnitude earthquakes will cause a tsunami. Similarly, destructive tsunamis rarely result from earthquakes with magnitudes between 6.5 and 7.5. Small sea level fluctuations, however, might be seen close to the epicentre. Although they are uncommon in this size range, tsunamis that might cause harm or fatalities do occasionally occur as a result of secondary impacts like landslides or underwater slumps. But an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.6 and above is capable of causing greater damage than anything.

There are some places that are more vulnerable to tsunamis and the destruction they might cause. This is a result of their proximity to nearby tsunami generators, exposure to distant tsunami generators, as well as the terrain and bathymetry of the area.
