Mahatma Gandhi’s Statue Vandalised In Canada To Terrorise Indian Community

A statue of Mahatma Gandhi at Vishnu Temple in Richmond Hill, Canada was vandalised, following which Indian authorities have expressed concern. India called for an investigation on the matter and stated that this ‘hate crime’ seeks to terrorise the Indian community-based in Canada. The perpetrators had written derogatory words on the statue like ‘rapist’ and ‘Khalistan’, as informed by the police officials. The Indian High Commission in Canada took to Twitter to express their deep anguish over the vandalisation of Mahatma Gandhi’s statue.

Hateful Act, Criminal Act Against Indians In Canada

The Indian High Commission also informed that they have approached the Canadian government to launch a proper investigation into the matter and that justice must be served. All higher authorities in Canada termed the incident as a ‘hate’ crime done to threaten the Indian community in Canada.

Constable Amy Boudreau, spokesperson for York Regional Police told, ‘Someone defaced the statue with ‘graphic words,’ including rapist and Khalistan’. The police also added that no hateful act will be tolerated in any form or act.

Further, she also expressed her concern in a media report on the issue and told that the perpetrators who victimised others based on race, national or ethnic origin, language, colour, religion, age, gender, gender identity, gender expression and the like will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

30-Years Old Mahatma Gandhi’s Statue In Canada

Commenting on the incident, the chairperson of the Vishnu Temple in Ontario told a prominent media house that such acts have never happened in the last 30 years of its existence in the country. He also expressed his disappointment over the issue and told that such things had never taken place in Richmond Hill and people lived in peace there. The Gandhi statue was built in 1988. Also, the vandalised statue was built in New Delhi with bronze and stands at a nine-feet height.
