Manipur Gets India’s First National Sports University; Sanctioned At The Cost Of ₹643 Crores

The Northeastern states have been largely neglected. However, there is an increasing focus on its development. On the 3rd of August, Anurag Thakur, the Union Minister for Sports told the parliament that the very first National Sports University is coming up in the Northeastern state of Manipur. He also went on to highlight some other sports-related developments that have taken place in the northeastern regions. Here are all the details you need to know.

Manipur Gets India’s First National Sports University

In the session held yesterday, Anurag Thakur revealed that the country’s first national sports university was allocated to Manipur. He also mentioned that the university was sanctioned at the cost of ₹643.34 crores. This is part of multiple sports-related infrastructure developments that the government has planned for the Northeastern regions as well as the rest of the country.

The university will help budding athletes pursue their athletic careers and will train up-and-coming sportsmen. Once established, the university will become the prime location for people who want to pursue a career in sports.

Thakur also specified that a number of other sports-related initiatives are being undertaken by the government. These initiatives are long overdue in these regions as the Northeast’s contribution to India’s glory in sports has been enormous.

Other Sports-Related Infrastructure Developments In Northeast

In addition to the National Sports University, a number of other sports-related initiatives as well as infrastructure developments are being undertaken. These initiatives will primarily be focused on the Northeastern states as well as other parts of the country.

The Union Minister of Sports also revealed that around 1,000 Khelo India Centres or KICs will be developed across the country. Out of these, a total of 227 will be developed in the Northeastern states themselves.

In addition to this, a total of 75 infrastructural development projects are being undertaken in the Northeast regions. The cost of these projects will be ₹520.60 crores. He also spoke of the huge contributions of Northeastern people to sports.
