A lot happened across the Middle East this week. Some updates were serious, others surprisingly random. One minute, the UAE is changing labour accommodation rules; the next, Greece and Türkiye are arguing over tripe soup again. So here’s a quick catch-up on the updates people across the Middle East are talking about right now.

10 Middle East Updates People Have Been Talking About

1. UAE Workers To Get Better Living Standards

The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation has introduced updated rules for labour accommodations across the UAE, and the changes go beyond just basic housing. Workers must now get free internet access, better recreational spaces and improved safety standards. Larger accommodation sites with more than 1,000 residents will also need round-the-clock clinics, sports facilities and even financial services nearby. For many workers, especially those living far from city centres, these daily-life improvements could make a real difference.

2. Dubai Street Renamed After Sheikh Zayed Farm

Dubai has renamed Al Faghi Street in Al Khawaneej to Sheikh Zayed Farm Street, honouring a location tied closely to the UAE’s founding story. The nearby farm was recently declared the country’s third official union site by Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Back in 1971, the late Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan reportedly held key meetings there with UAE rulers during discussions leading up to the Union.

3. UAE Skies Suffer From Dusty Winds

If the UAE has looked unusually dusty lately, there’s a reason. Emirati astronomer Ibrahim Al Jarwan says the country is currently being affected by seasonal “Al Bareh” winds. These northwesterly summer winds bring dry conditions and dust, especially across desert areas. But they also help coastal areas avoid extreme temperature spikes early in summer. That said, worse heat is still coming. Because Gulf summers never really stop at “slightly warm”.

4. Qatar Toy Festival Tickets Are Officially Live

Families in Qatar can now book tickets for the 2026 edition of the Qatar Toy Festival happening at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Centre from July 1 to 31. The event promises games, live shows, character appearances and activities across multiple zones. Ticket prices start at QR50, while premium VVIP packages reach QR1,500.

The legislation covers land, marine and mountain areas, including zones inside DIFC. Authorities say the move is about preserving Dubai’s cultural identity as the city continues growing rapidly.
