With countries moving towards smarter and more sustainable transportation solutions, the race is truly on. And recently, it was revealed that Saudi Arabia has also launched its pilot phase of autonomous or driverless vehicles. Happening in Riyadh, this comes at a time when the UAE is also actively pursuing this route for transportation.
Riyadh Autonomous Vehicle Testing
As revealed by Saudi Arabia’s Transport General Authority, Riyadh is now testing driverless vehicles. It can reach a maximum speed of 100 kilometres per hour and is expected to operate in seven locations across the capital. These locations include the King Khalid International airport, and 13 designated pick-up and drop-off points have been recognised for the vehicle.
The Pilot Phase Will Continue For 12 Months

Since this is a pilot phase, these vehicles will transport passengers with a safety officer inside the vehicle. This is being done to monitor its performance and ensure that there is safety in real-world conditions. This pilot phase will continue for a year, which marks its move towards a truly sustainable smart mobility.

It Has Been Launched With Collaborative Effort
As it happens, this project has been able to take shape because of the comprehensive partnership between the transport and logistics system and key private and government sector organisations. From the Ministry of Interior to the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority, several organisations were a part of this concentrated effort to begin the trials. As it happens, it’s worth mentioning that the private sector has several leading and operational partners, which include Uber and AiDriver.
So, with a collaborative effort, aiming to introduce smarter mobility solutions in the nation, you can expect driverless taxis to become a reality soon in the kingdom.
