Saudi Arabia is still allowing Saudi citizens and people from GCC countries to perform Umrah until May 3, even as the country starts shifting into full Hajj season mode. The announcement came from the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah. It said Saudis and nationals from Gulf Cooperation Council countries can continue entering Mecca for Umrah until the 15th of Dhul Qada. And they won’t need a Hajj permit for that entry during this period.
Umrah Access Extended For Saudis And GCC Citizens
That matters for many people who were hoping to complete Umrah before the massive Hajj crowds begin filling the holy cities.
Earlier, the ministry had already set April 19 as the final date for pilgrims on Umrah visas to leave Saudi Arabia. That step usually signals the beginning of preparations for Hajj, when authorities start focusing on managing the arrival of international pilgrims heading to Mecca and Medina.
Surge In Crowd During The Final Days
But in these last few days before the cut-off fully kicks in, the Grand Mosque has been packed.
People have been travelling in from different parts of Saudi Arabia, trying to make use of the remaining time. Families, small groups, and older pilgrims, too. The crowds have noticeably grown, especially during weekends when more local visitors arrive after work or short breaks.
Hotels around the Grand Mosque are also feeling the pressure. Many nearby properties have seen very high occupancy levels over the past few days. Some areas close to the mosque have become especially busy at night, with worshippers moving between prayers, hotels and nearby shops almost nonstop.

Why Does This Surge Help Businesses In The Region?
For many businesses in the area, this period brings a final rush before Hajj operations take over completely.
Also, the timing is important because international Hajj pilgrims have already started arriving in Saudi Arabia. Authorities now have to balance both Umrah visitors and incoming Hajj pilgrims while keeping movement organised inside the holy sites.
The coming days are expected to stay crowded until the May 3 deadline passes.
