Hajj Visa Vs Umrah Visa; What Indian Pilgrims Should Know Before Starting Their Journey

Saudi Arabia has now tightened entry rules ahead of Hajj 2026. It has barred visa holders from performing the pilgrimage and restricted access to holy cities without an official permit. This also comes alongside a pause on Umrah visas. The difference between Hajj and Umrah visas is important for an Indian pilgrim to understand if they are planning a pilgrimage.

Saudi Arabia Pauses Umrah Visas Ahead Of Hajj 2026

Hajj is the mandatory annual pilgrimage to Mecca. It is required once in a lifetime for capable Muslims. On the other hand, Umrah is a voluntary act of worship that can be performed anytime. Both pilgrimages require different visas, which can sometimes confuse an Indian pilgrim. According to The Economic Times, Saudi Arabia has tightened entry rules ahead of Hajj and also paused Umrah visas.

Reportedly, visit visa holders are not allowed to perform the Hajj pilgrimage and cannot enter holy cities without an official permit. This means only people with approved Hajj permits will be allowed to enter Mecca during the pilgrimage period. Authorities have made it clear that pilgrims must travel through authorised channels with valid permits. A person, whether a foreign national or a resident, cannot enter Mecca without official approval. This decision has been taken to control crowds and ensure safety.

What’s The Difference Between Hajj & Umrah Visas

According to The Economic Times, people can face strict penalties, fines and possible bans if they violate these rules. You should know that Hajj is performed during specific dates and requires a special visa. These visas are issued through travel operators and are subject to country-wise quotas. Applicants must meet health, financial and documentation requirements. This includes passport validity and vaccination certificates.

On the other hand, Umrah can be performed throughout the year. Pilgrims can apply for an Umrah visa or a tourist e-visa after meeting entry conditions. However, Saudi Arabia has currently suspended Umrah visas during the Hajj period. This is to give priority to Hajj pilgrims and streamline logistics.

This means Indian pilgrims planning Umrah should wait for these restrictions to lift, which will happen after the Hajj window ends. If you are planning Hajj this year, make sure you apply only through official channels. Also, get valid permits before starting your journey to avoid any problems later.
