UAE Expands Freelance Leave Scheme For Emiratis; What It Means For Jobs, Startups & Hiring

The UAE is investing more into its talent. The Federal Authority for Human Resources (FAHR), UAE commences the 3rd phase of their Freelance Leave Scheme. This gives Emirati federal employees a rare choice: they can take up to a year of unpaid leave to start a business or work for themselves without losing their government job.

The UAE Gives Emiratis A Year Off To Start Their Own Businesses With Job Security

This last phase lets 2,000 more employees join, bringing the total number of eligible participants to 5,500 since 2024.

More Than Just A Break

This isn’t a simple sabbatical. FAHR has added three support layers to increase the odds of success. First, a mentorship network will connect participants with experienced entrepreneurs. Real advice. Real-world lessons. Second, a subsidised training programme will cover important topics like marketing, finance, and compliance for small businesses.

Effects On Hiring And Visas

The plan is meant for Emiratis, but it will have effects beyond that. VisaHQ says that government agencies often hire foreigners to fill in for nationals who are on long leave. That means that hiring could pick up in the next few months.

VisaHQ and other similar platforms are likely to be very important in this situation, as they will help businesses and professionals quickly deal with visa requirements as job openings arise.

At the same time, free zones may see an increase in the number of people who want freelance permits as people seek employment outside of traditional jobs.

A New Way For Businesses To Work Together

It’s important to look at this from a different angle. FAHR’s mentorship programme is open to people who don’t work for the government. People who work in the private sector can act as advisors. This gives global companies a new way to get into the UAE’s talent pool. It’s not just about hiring people anymore; it’s about shaping future founders.

That fits in well with the country’s larger Emiratisation push, which aims to get more people involved in the private sector.
