In Bahrain, some Eid traditions are loud and busy. Big family lunches, crowded homes, children running everywhere. But Hiya Biya feels softer somehow. This Monday, families across Bahrain are expected to gather once again by the sea for the annual Hiya Biya celebration, a tradition many people grew up with as children themselves.

Bahrain Families Are Bringing Back The Sweet Tradition Of Hiya Biya This Eid

The event, organised by the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities, will take place at Qal’at Bu Mahir from 4.30 pm.

And honestly, for many parents, it’s not just about entertaining children. It’s about passing down memories.

Children Grow Tiny Plants Before Letting Them Go

The tradition of Hiya Biya happens around Eid Al Adha and marks the end of the Haj pilgrimage season.

Children usually grow small seedlings at home beforehand, often using fast-growing seeds like beans or radishes. The plants are placed inside small woven baskets made from palm leaves.

Kids gather by the sea, sing traditional songs and gently throw the seedlings into the water while wishing that one day they too will visit Haj.

But for many Bahrainis, it carries a lot of meaning connected to faith, patience and childhood memories.

Also, the seedlings later become food for fish once they drift into the sea, which gives the whole ritual another layer tied to nature and the environment.

Families Will Walk Along The Shore Together

This year’s programme includes a coastal walk beginning at 5.30 pm along the shoreline at Qal’at Bu Mahir.

Traditional folk performances will accompany the walk, with singers and musicians performing old Bahraini chants near the water.

It’s the kind of atmosphere that instantly makes older generations nostalgic.

For children, though, it’s usually more exciting than emotional. They get dressed up, carry their tiny plants proudly and sing loudly without fully realising they’re participating in something that has existed for generations.

Storytelling Will Also Be Part Of The Evening

The event will also feature a storytelling session led by Baba Yaseen, who will share stories connected to Bahrain’s folk traditions and the country’s historical relationship with the sea.

That part matters because Bahrain’s identity has always been deeply tied to the water pearl diving, fishing and coastal life that shaped daily routines for decades.

Hiya Biya quietly reflects some of that history, too.

But beyond heritage and culture, events like this give families a rare excuse to slow down together during Eid.
