Applying For An Italy Visa From The UAE? Here’s A Rule That Just Changed

Italy Visa UAE

If you’re applying for an Italy visa out of the UAE this year, the rulebook has quietly shifted, and depending on why you’re applying, that’s either good news or a bit more admin than you bargained for. The Italian Consulate, working through VFS Global (which handles Schengen visa processing across the UAE), has rolled out updated requirements covering family reunification cases and student applications. The consulate has been blunt about one thing: an incomplete file is a rejected file, so precision matters more than ever.

What’s Changed For Family Reunification Visas

This is the stricter half of the update. If you’re applying for a family reunification visa as an EU citizen’s spouse and the marriage took place in a country other than your country of origin, you can no longer simply submit the marriage certificate from wherever the wedding happened. The new rule requires the original marriage certificate issued in your home country, and it has to be authenticated or carry an apostille. Previously, a certificate from the country of marriage was enough to move the file forward. Now, if you married abroad, you’ll need to circle back to your home country’s records to get the right document in hand before you even think about booking a VFS appointment.

Good News If You’re A Student In The UAE

Here’s where things actually get easier. Students based in the UAE used to have to send their final school certificates back to the curriculum’s home country for attestation: the UK for A-Levels, Switzerland for the IB, India for CBSE or ICSE, and so on. That entire extra loop is gone. You can now submit the original certificate issued by your school right here in the UAE, as long as it’s verified by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs, clearly states that you’ve completed your studies and which curriculum you followed, and comes with an Italian translation attached.

There’s a second win buried in here too: the Certificate of Value (DOV) and CIMEA qualification assessment, which used to be near-automatic requirements, are now only needed if your specific university asks for one as part of registration. One document that hasn’t gone anywhere, though, is the confirmed flight reservation, which is still non-negotiable for any student visa file.

The Bottom Line

Whichever category you fall into, the message from the consulate is consistent: double-check your document list before you submit, because there’s less room for error than before. Families should budget extra time to source home-country paperwork; students, for once, have one less flight to catch before their actual flight to Italy.
