Most airports are content to collect feedback and quietly file it away. Sharjah Airport has been doing something rather different for the past 17 years. It actually rewards passengers whose suggestions lead to real improvements. The latest round of that recognition has just taken place, with five travellers honoured for ideas that measurably enhanced services at the airport.

The ‘Because We Care’ Initiative and What It Stands For

Launched in 2009, Sharjah Airport Authority’s ‘Because We Care’ programme was built on a straightforward premise: the people best placed to spot what an airport is getting wrong or what it could do better are the passengers moving through it every day.

Feedback comes in through multiple channels, including satisfaction surveys on the official website and direct conversations with the airport’s dedicated Passenger Experience team on the ground. Nothing is left to chance; the teams actively seek out travellers rather than simply waiting for complaints to arrive in an inbox.

The five winners recognised in this latest round each submitted suggestions that were adopted and turned into visible service improvements. As part of the recognition, each received complimentary Air Arabia flight tickets, sponsored by the airline, a fitting reward from the airport’s home carrier.

What Passenger Feedback Actually Changes At The Airport

Dr Ahmed Alhmoudi, Director of the Customer Service Department at Sharjah Airport Authority, has described the programme as a key mechanism for translating passenger voices into tangible action. Speaking about the initiative, he noted that it serves as an effective channel for gathering feedback and converting suggestions into improvements across every stage of the passenger journey, from arrival at the terminal right through to departure.

Sharjah Airport’s approach to feedback, covering the full end-to-end experience, rather than focusing narrowly on check-in times or retail satisfaction, which reflects a more sophisticated understanding of what passengers actually care about.

The airport’s approach also addresses something that many feedback systems overlook: the gap between gathering opinions and acting on them. Knowing that your idea might earn recognition and has a genuine chance of being implemented changes how passengers engage with the process entirely.

Why Sharjah Airport’s Model Deserves Wider Attention

There’s a growing conversation across the aviation industry about how airports can differentiate themselves beyond infrastructure and retail. The ‘Because We Care’ programme, now in its 17th year, is a good example of how consistent, long-running commitment to a principle builds something hard to replicate quickly. It’s not a seasonal campaign or a rebranded customer satisfaction drive; it’s an embedded part of how the airport operates.
