According to IMD’s forecast, Mumbai is likely to witness more rains this week due to favourable conditions for pre-monsoon showers.

On Tuesday, Mumbai woke up to heavy rainfall. The unseasonal rain intensified overnight after a light-moderate downpour on Monday. The sudden shower brought some much-needed relief from the sweltering heat and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert in Mumbai and neighbouring districts as well.

IMD Forecasts More Rain, Thunderstorms For Mumbai

Rain has lashed several eastern suburbs of Mumbai like Kurla, Ghatkopar, Sion, and Chembur. While light rain showers were observed in some parts of the city, others received heavy rainfall that caused traffic congestion. IMD has issued a fresh yellow alert for Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and Palghar districts until Wednesday.

More rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds are expected in these areas on Tuesday. The weather department further mentioned that Mumbai will continue to experience light rain and thunderstorms before dry weather sets in after Thursday. For Thane, Raigad, and Palghar, the yellow alert has been extended until Wednesday.

Other parts of Maharashtra will also see intense to moderate rain showers this week. Western Maharashtra regions like Nashik, Pune, Kolhapur, Satara, and Sangli, have been placed under an ‘orange warning’ by the IMD.

Pre-Monsoon Showers Bring Relief From Heat

On Monday, Mumbai recorded a maximum temperature of 34°C and a minimum temperature of 27°C. The mercury is further expected to dip by a degree this week, thanks to the unseasonal rains. So far, Mumbai has seen a fairly nice May, with all the rain and windy weather. According to the Indian Express, Mumbai recorded its coldest May day since 1951, after the Colaba Coastal Observatory recorded a minimum temperature of 22.2°C last Thursday.

Reportedly, IMD’s Colaba station recorded 48.7 mm of rain between May 6 and May 9, while the Santacruz station logged 38.4 mm of rain during the same period. This makes it Mumbai’s wettest May since 2021.
