In a sudden shift in weather conditions, parts of Mumbai were hit by a severe dust storm on April 4, reducing visibility and causing havoc in the city. Reportedly, the storm was triggered by a cyclonic circulation developing over the region, radically altering wind patterns and pulling in moist air from both the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal. This abrupt change was followed by a drop in temperature from a sweltering 39°C to a cold, stormy environment within minutes. As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), thunderstorms along with gusty winds can be anticipated to continue in Mumbai till April 4, leaving more dust and potentially rain over the city.

The dust storm was intensified by high levels of humidity and loose construction debris. Seasonal variations in the atmosphere and the pace of urban development in Mumbai created the perfect conditions for the storm. Most parts of the city, particularly the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) region, were hit hard by thick layers of airborne dust and reduced visibility.
IMD also predicted gusty winds, thunder, and lightning in Mumbai and the suburbs until April 4. Kalyan, Bhiwandi, and Ulhasnagar areas may experience moderate thunderstorms, while Thane and Navi Mumbai can expect light rainfall. People with respiratory illnesses or pre-existing conditions are being warned to take care, stay indoors, and make use of protective masks if they go outside.
Authorities and weather experts have expressed concern that such weather phenomena could become more frequent with climate change and environmental pollution.
The storm was a subject of instant buzz on social media, with people uploading videos and photos of the foreboding spectacle unfolding over the city. A user uploaded a video on X (formerly, Twitter), ‘WEATHER ALERT! KDMC hit by sudden gust of winds & dust storm!
