Part Of Mumbai Airport’s 80-Year-Old T1 To Be Demolished In 2027; Flights To Be Shifted

Mumbai Airport Set For A Major T1 Redevelopment 

Mumbai Airport is operated by the Adani Group, and the company has announced a demolition project at Terminal 1 (T1). As per Business Standard, the demolition at T1 will begin on January 15, 2027. Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL), which operates Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, has informed the Civil Aviation Ministry about the redevelopment plan.

At present, Mumbai Airport handles more than 950 flight movements every day and has a capacity of over 50 million passengers. T1 can handle around 15 million passengers, while T2 can handle around 40 million passengers. The T1 of the airport is nearly 80-years-old and some parts have already been demolished.

Which Part Of Terminal 1 To Be Demolished?

MIAL is planning to start the demolishing in phases. First phase of T1 demolishing will being with the North Section of Terminal 1-B. This section currently handles 5 million passengers per annum (mppa). According to Business Standard, the authorities has decided to limit the first phase of redevelopment till this section to make sure flight operations are not disrupted a lot. 

Preparing for this demolition, MIAL has already started planning for the transition of the flights. From October 1, at least one-third of all international flights will shift to Navi Mumbai International Airport. From October 25, at least one-third of T1’s air traffic will shift to T2. MIAL will give airlines around three-and-a-half months to prepare for the change before the demolition starts. Akasa Air has already moved its domestic flights from T1 to T2 on August 1. 

MIAL is also talking to domestic and international airlines about shifting some flights from T2 to Navi Mumbai International Airport. MIAL has also asked the Civil Aviation Ministry to set up a Joint Transition Group to manage these changes smoothly.
