Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC), the operator of the city’s underground Metro Line 3, is looking to attract more passengers by late 2025. As per a report by Hindustan Times, the authorities are considering launching promotional offers. Additionally, they plan to provide fare discounts to commuters.

The 33.5 km Aqua Line, which connects South Mumbai to Aarey, is divided into three stretches. The first stretch between Aarey-JVLR and Bandra Kurla Complex was inaugurated on October 7, 2024. The second stretch from Bandra Kurla Complex to Worli’s Acharya Atre Chowk opened on May 9 this year. The final stretch to Cuffe Parade is set to be inaugurated by the end of August.

Plans To Increase Daily Ridership

According to a report by HT, the current 12.69 km operational stretch, which includes the recently opened 9.77 km section, sees over 52,000 daily passengers on weekdays. This is far below the projected 1.4 million daily passengers. To address the gap, MMRC is considering appointing a special agency to plan strategies to increase ridership.

The Aqua Line passes close to several key locations, including major workplaces, airport terminals, and educational institutions, all of which could help draw in more commuters. Moreover, an MMRC official mentioned that this will be the first time the corporation will offer discounts and promotional activities. They have never hired agencies for such collaborations before.

If an agency is appointed, it will identify major commercial buildings and developer associations near Metro Line 3 stations. Kiosks with QR codes will be set up at these locations to guide people to the Metro’s mobile application, where they can find ticket details and offers.
