Growing up in a Maharashtrian household meant that Sundays weren’t for breezy lunches or takeout food. Sonali Bendre shared that meals at her mother’s home are still all about classic Maharashtrian comfort food, with bombil fry taking centre stage alongside spicy and oh-so-flavourful mutton vade.
Marriage, however, added another cuisine to her Sundays. At her in-laws’ Punjabi home, the menu changes. Instead of coastal flavours, it’s hearty North Indian comfort food. So yes, there are bowls of rajma chawal, silky kadhi served over steaming rice, or drool-worthy poori chole.

Bhindi And Baingan Raita Left Kamiya Jani Surprised
But just when you think you’ve heard enough food stories, Sonali Bendre casually drops a detail that completely catches Kamiya Jani off guard. “We also make bhindi ka raita and baingan ka raita.” Sonali revealed this, and Kamiya Jani couldn’t hide her surprise. Bhindi… in raita? Baingan… in raita? She immediately asked what these fancy combinations were because, let’s be honest, most of us have only ever seen cucumber, boondi or maybe pineapple making it into a bowl of yoghurt.
Sonali Bendre burst into laughter before revealing the reason behind these recipes, and it’s one every parent will probably relate to.
She said they’re the easiest way to get both her husband, filmmaker Goldie Behl, and their son to eat vegetables without any complaints. Instead of serving bhindi or baingan as standalone sabzis that can easily be pushed aside, the vegetables become part of a creamy raita that’s impossible to resist.
