Mumbai’s Filmistan Studios Sold For ₹183 crore
The iconic shooting location in Mumbai, Filmistan Studio, which served as a backdrop for many films, has now been sold for ₹183 crore to Arkade Developers. One of Mumbai’s earliest and most storied studios, it was founded by Kajol and Rani Mukerji’s grandfather, Sashadhar Mukherjee, in 1943, as per a report in The Times of India.
The deal was officially registered on July 3, and sources say that the developers will redevelop the location into luxury towers by 2026. Filmistan Studios was born out of a break from Bombay Talkies and quickly became a popular hub for film production. It also played a key role in shaping the growth of Indian cinema since the 1940s.

Apart from being a rental space, the studio also operated as a production house that employed actors on monthly salaries. Located in the heart of Goregaon West, it was known for its sound stages and amazing outdoor sets. Over the decades, Filmistan Studios served as a backdrop for hundreds of Bollywood films, TV shows, and advertisements. However, with the rise of technologically advanced studios, it gradually lost its charm.
Now, Arkade Developers will transform the 4-acre plot on SV Road into an ultra-luxury residential project worth ₹3,000 crore. The developers plan to launch this project in 2026. In addition, the project will include 3, 4, and 5 BHK residences along with penthouses spread across 50-storey towers.
