According to The Times of India, Environment Minister Eshwar Khandre has approved the proposal to build a penguin park in Mysuru. The decision was taken during the Zoo Authority of Karnataka board meeting recently. After Mumbai and Ahmedabad, this would be the third such facility in India.

The authorities have decided to convert the ongoing aquarium project into a penguin park at Karanji Lake, Mysuru. According to the forest department, the project will be constructed at an estimated cost of ₹30-40 crore as the facility will need special micro-climatic conditions.

As penguins need cold climatic conditions, the forest department will have to recreate conditions suitable for them. They will have to create artificial cooling effects and maintain temperatures below zero degrees. For this, they will need a round-the-clock power supply for freezers and air conditioners. Initially, Karnataka aims to get four or five penguins at the facility.
