After Uttarakhand faced one of the worst weather conditions in the country, many schools and educational institutions have closed. This has left many children without education or books entirely. Seeing the dire situation, a resident of Nainital came up with a creative solution.
Shubham Badhani came up with the idea of the ‘Ghoda Library’ or ‘Horse Library.’ Just as the name suggests, books are loaded on the backs of a horse which then visits different people and even villages.
This has made accessing books significantly easier at a time when schools and educational institutions might be reeling from the bad weather that the state faced in the past months. The initiative was a huge success as the horse attracted the attention of not just kids, but also of adults.

Just as you might think, the horse proved to be a delightful attraction, especially for children. However, there were many other factors that resulted in the initiative’s success. Many parents volunteered their horses which made the initiative sustainable.
So far, this initiative has been adopted by many other villages in the district of Nainital. They are Alekh, Baghani, Bansi, Dhinvakharakh, Gautiya, Jalna and Mahaldhura. The horse goes on a round from village to village attracting children and adults alike.
Those who are in need or want to read any book on the horse’s back, are free to do so. This move has made education more accessible, fun and easy. Shubham Badhani definitely deserves more recognition for this.
