There are many remote no-network destinations in India that will force us to a digital detox. The gorgeous Spiti Valley in Himachal Pradesh, which is perched at an elevation from about 9,680 feet to 13,450 feet, is one such place.  Those who are longing to do away with their internet addiction for some time might find this aspect welcoming. But, spending a day with absolutely no cellular network is surely challenging. We need to have a network to make a call at least.  So, here are a few tips and tricks to deal with the feeble mobile phone connectivity in the distant expanses of Spiti and Kinnaur valley:

1. Get Hold Of A BSNL/MTNL Sim

The network that works in most regions of the Spiti valley is BSNL/MTNL network. The network quality might intermittently drop, due to the remoteness of the region. In some parts of Kinnaur, Jio or Airtel might work faintly, but in other zones, they might remain dead, just like all other networks. Networks are mostly available in Kalpa, Sangla, Chitkul, Tabo, parts of Kaza and Reckong Peo.  Meanwhile, this quaint hostel in Himachal has colourful murals and beds starting at ₹494.

2.  Use Satellite Phones

You can get satellite phones at ₹2 per minute for STD or ISD at Batal and Mudh villages to make emergency calls. You should take this facility only when it is absolutely necessary.

3. Complete Your Important Tasks Beforehand

Need to attend an important client call? Or need to send an email? Or have to talk with a family member over the phone? We advise you to complete all of it before entering the remote parts of Spiti. As, in most cases, it’s possible, that luck won’t favour you in terms of network.

4. You Have To Go Back To The 2G-Era

It’s rare to get a 3G network in Spiti. Wi-Fi might be available at a slow pace at a handful of hotels, cafes and guest houses, but most of the data connectivity is up to 2G. Thankfully, even if you get that connection, you will at least be able to send a WhatsApp message.

5. Be Extra Cautious During Winters

During the cold months, the entire valley of Spiti gets blanketed with thick layers of snow. At times, massive snowfall can hamper connectivity. The poles might even get buried under snow. Thus, during winter, forget about mobile network, you won’t even find electricity in certain places.
