Heavy Rain Floods Queens, NYC; Emergency Declared, New Yorkers Urged To Stay Indoors

The flood was so extreme that water began seeping through the walls of the 7th Avenue Station in New York City. People are being urged to stay indoors and remain cautious.

Following heavy rainfall on Thursday, several key areas in NYC saw flooding. Dramatic visuals emerged on social media showing many roads and vehicles fully submerged in water, particularly in northern Queens near Bayside. The flooding halted transportation, with a train stuck mid-route carrying 100 passengers onboard.

Flash Flood Hits Northern Queens In NYC 


Videos are circulating on social media showing how parts of New York City, especially Queens, were flooded, with vehicles and roads submerged. Torrential rain hit NYC on Thursday, leading to massive water inflow. As per a report by Hindustan Times, Grand Central and Park Place subway stations were also flooded. X user @hail3ywx uploaded videos showing flooding in Bayside, Queens. 

The worsening situation also brought transportation to a halt, leaving many passengers and drivers stuck. A Long Island Rail Road train (LIRR) was stuck mid-route with 100 passengers aboard. As per a report by The Economic Times, the train was heading towards Penn Station and was brought to a stop near Jamaica Station. Floodwater poured onto the tracks, trapping passengers inside.

Floodwater Leaks Through The Walls Of 7th Avenue Station


The flood situation turned so extreme that one video even showed water seeping through the walls of the 7th Avenue Station in Park Slope. An X user shared the video and wrote, “Floodwater seeped through the walls of the 7th Avenue station in Park Slope on Thursday as storms brought heavy rain and flooding to New York City.”

New York Governor Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency on Thursday. Emergency measures were also put in place as flash flood warnings spread in NYC. Vehicles were seen submerged on Clearview Expressway in Queens. The highway has now been closed in both directions. According to the NWS, one to three inches of rain is expected, with some areas possibly getting five inches. Governor Kathy Hochul urged residents to stay vigilant, informed, and cautious.

Heavy downpour and localised flooding are expected in some parts of NYC. State agencies remain on standby to monitor the situation and ensure the safety of New Yorkers during the storm. People are also being urged to stay indoors.

Several flights were delayed and cancelled at all three of New York City’s major airports. It affected both arrivals and departures. Operations are expected to return to normal once the rain subsides and conditions improve.
