Sairang–Delhi Rajdhani Express Flagged Off: Mizoram Joins Rail Network After 172 Years, All You Need To Know

Aizawl is finally on the railway map. On September 13, Prime Minister Narendra Modi waved the green flag for Mizoram’s first-ever train to Delhi, the Sairang-Anand Vihar Rajdhani Express. For a state that has waited over 170 years since India’s first train, the launch is more than symbolic: it’s a lifeline that ties Mizoram directly to the capital.

Mizoram’s First Railway To Delhi: A Historic Flag-Off

According to NDTV, the Rajdhani Express will roll out of Sairang, a small town about 20 km from Aizawl, and cover more than 2,510 km before pulling into Delhi’s Anand Vihar Terminal. The trip will take close to 43 hours, winding through Assam and West Bengal, before entering Bihar and Uttar Pradesh on its way to the capital. Along the route, the train will pause at 21 stations, including important junctions like Guwahati, New Jalpaiguri, Malda Town, Bhagalpur, Patna, and Kanpur.

For the inaugural run, the 20-coach train is scheduled to depart at 10:00 am on Saturday and reach Delhi early Monday morning. Once regular service begins on September 19, train number 20507 will leave Sairang every Saturday evening and arrive in Delhi on Monday forenoon. The return service, 20508, will start from Anand Vihar on Monday night and reach Mizoram by Tuesday afternoon, as stated by The Indian Express. 

A seat in AC 3-Tier is expected to cost around ₹4,500, AC 2-Tier around ₹6,000, and a berth in First Class about ₹7,800. As with all Rajdhanis, prices may shift slightly depending on booking and demand, but passengers can expect these ballpark figures.

Getting this line built has been no small feat. The Bairabi-Sairang broad gauge section cost more than ₹8,200 crore and demanded some of the toughest railway engineering in the Northeast: 48 tunnels, over 150 bridges, and four entirely new stations like Hortoki, Kawnpui, Mualkhang, and Sairang. Carved through deep gorges, thick forests, and unforgiving hills, the project is being hailed as one of the most ambitious rail works in the region.

For Mizoram, the impact is impressive. Travel between Aizawl and Guwahati, which once meant a 16-hour road journey, will now be a 12-hour train ride. The trip to Silchar shrinks even more dramatically, from nearly seven hours by road to three hours on the rails, as stated by Indian Express. Officials believe this will not only ease passenger travel but also slash the cost of moving goods, opening new doors for trade and tourism.

With the Sairang-Delhi Rajdhani, Mizoram is no longer the state without trains. It is connected, plugged in, and for the first time, a Rajdhani away from the nation’s capital.
