The UAE has announced a new grace period for leaving or renewing a residency visa following its cancellation or expiration. Earlier, the grace period was 30 days, which is now increased to between 60 and 180 days. However, the grace period depends on the type of visa. This is part of the UAE’s plan to boost the economy and loosen restrictions on UAE travel.
UAE Visa Grace Period
During the grace period, expats are allowed to stay in the country and make arrangements. Typically, expatriates either renew their visas or leave the country and re-enter with a different type of visa. The grace period decided is enough to choose any one of the above. However, it is not yet announced whether this new grace period is applicable to those whose visas have already been cancelled.
The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security’s (ICP) customer care agents and typing centre agents said that the new grace period is now in effect. Last month, the UAE implemented significant changes to its entry and residence visa programmes. They also informed me that the grace period varies according to the type.

New Rules
Only green visa holders and their families, as well as golden visa holders and their families, will be granted a 180-day grace period. Widows and divorcees, students who have completed their studies, and skilled professionals (1st and 2nd level) are also eligible. A grace period of 90 days is allowed for skilled professionals (3rd level) and property owners.
Normal residencies are allowed a grace period of 60 days. All the other categories will have a grace period of 30 days. The dependents of skilled professionals with a 180-day grace period will have a grace period of 60 days only. Unlike in the past, freehold visas are now only valid for two years. The new rule applies to people who apply as dependents or partners of a mainland company.
