The Fukutsu Sea Mirror is a visual spectacle. As the sun sets, the sky is painted with many hues, perfectly mirrored on the wet sand. This creates a seamless blend of colours and reflections. This phenomenon offers a perfect setting for photographers. Once a local secret, the stunning reflecting phenomena known as the Fukutsu Kagami no Umi (Fukutsu Sea Mirror) has gained attention recently. Now, it draws large numbers of tourists to this little seaside town.
The gorgeous view of the sun setting above Miyajidake Shrine, which forms a perfect line of sunlight across the road leading to the sea between February and October, has already brought recognition to the Fukutsu area. The tourism board released advice for taking the ideal picture on the Fukutsu Sea Mirror website as visitors started flocking. They also took to Instagram to share their photos of nature’s mirror.

While the Fukutsu Sea Mirror is a stunning sight, it is important to consider its ecological impact and the need for sustainable tourism. When someone visits this section of the shore, they won’t witness things like crisp wrappers fluttering through the air or plastic bottles building up. This is because residents make it a point to pick up any rubbish they come across on their frequent walks along the beach, and groups gather together on the weekends or on other designated days to carry out extra clean-ups.
To mitigate these impacts, local authorities and environmental organizations have implemented measures to protect the beach. Throughout the city, there are even accredited eco shops that obtain their certification by putting into practice eco-friendly practices like recycling and waste reduction. The inhabitants hope that tourists will recognise and emulate the general awareness of the surrounding environment and nature.
Through sustainable tourism practices and a deep respect for nature, Fukutsu hopes to enchant and inspire for generations to come.
