Spending time at hill stations might be great, but exploring lesser-known ones feels even better. Since it is peak summer time, many people are rushing to places like Mussoorie, Shimla, Manali and more, which is causing overtourism. And yes, overtourism at such places totally destroys the point of a peaceful holiday, right?
But Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra has now put the spotlight on a destination you would definitely love. Taking to his official X account, he wrote, “The country’s most popular tourist destinations seem to be becoming victims of their own success.” Every other day, we come across images of traffic jams at hill stations. And according to Anand Mahindra, “Holidays that were meant to be relaxing end up testing people’s patience.”
But he also spoke about how vast India is, and there is no shortage of beautiful destinations that remain relatively undiscovered. He then talked about Valparai, a hill station in Tamil Nadu. He also wrote, “It looks like the Munnar many of us wish we had seen 30 years ago.”

What Makes This Hill Station A Hidden Gem?
Valparai is considered one of South India’s most underrated hill stations. It is nestled at an elevation of 3,500 feet in the Anamalai Hills of the Western Ghats. The hill station is quite the opposite of overcrowded places like Ooty, Munnar, Shimla, Mussoorie and others.
It is one of the best spots to spot the Great Hornbill, Lion-tailed macaque and Nilgiri Tahr. Instead of traffic, Valparai offers rolling emerald tea estates, mist-covered valleys and a lot of silence. Many netizens called the place a perfect getaway for holidays. One user even joked that the place would get crowded after this post.
