Have you ever found yourself wondering if the food item you’re picking up from the local grocery store is healthy? Well, you no longer have to play the guessing game as Abu Dhabi will soon launch mandatory food labelling called the Nutri-Mark System. A system that shows how healthy the food is, it is expected to be introduced next year. Here’s more about this important development regarding food.

From June 2025 onwards, some food items that are sold across the shops in Abu Dhabi must include a mandatory food labelling called Nutri-Mark System this is a nutritional grading system, which would be displayed on their packaging and would grade how healthy the food is.

According to the report by The National News, it was revealed that the healthiness of the food would be determined using the letters A to E with A having the highest nutritional value. In contrast, E would have the lowest nutritional value. In fact, initially, the grades will apply to dairy products, baked goods, children’s food, beverages, and oil. Children’s food will include food items like snacks and cereals, that will display the nutritional reading system. Later this system will then be displayed on all the food items in the emirate.

It Will Display How Healthy Is Your Food

It’s worth mentioning that if a food item fails to meet the standards or incorrect labelling is found, it will be withdrawn from the market. Although existing goods have six months to update their packaging, these labels will be valid for a year. Not to mention, manufacturers who are importing new products must already apply for the label. This step has been taken to combat obesity, which is not just an issue in the UAE but across the club. In fact, the announcement for this nutritional grading system was made during the ongoing Abu Dhabi International Food Exhibition, which is running till November 28.

It should be noted that these new labels have been designed in such a way that it is clear and effective. It will showcase whether the food being consumed is healthy or not. So, when you go shopping next year in Abu Dhabi, you can select items carefully by taking in their nutritional value.
